Interfaith Studies Courses

WR 1200 Interfaith Studies I 3 credits

Introduction to the origins of religion, the Perennial Philosophy, and the elements of theology focusing on Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism.

WR 1220 Interfaith Studies II 3 credits

A continuation of Interfaith Studies I, focusing on the contours and diversity of Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Pre-requisite WR1200

WR 1280 Studies in Mysticism 3 credits/ 1 credit per term

Historical overview of mysticism provides a basis for reflection on experiences of the Transcendent. Focus is on mystics of the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions.

WR 1240 Interfaith Studies III 3 credits
A continuation of Interfaith Studies I and II. Explores the evolution of American Spiritual traditions. Pre-requisite WR 1200,1220

Heritage Studies Courses

SC 1210 Studies in the Hebrew Bible 3 credits

Overview of the history, authors, and literature of the Old Testament. Introduces the student to the field of biblical criticism, methods of interpretation and practice in homiletics.

SC 1220 Studies in the Christian Testament 3 credits

Overview of the history, authors and key teachings of the Christian Testament (New Testament). Introduces the student to current New Testament scholarship and non-canonical writings.

PH 1250 Evolution of New Thought Philosophy 3 credits

Study of the history and major characters of the New Thought movement, teachings and churches. Considers current expressions of the movement and directions in development.

SC 1230 Wisdom Writings of the World 3 credits
Studies of non-biblical spiritual literature of the world.

SR 1240 New Paradigms of Science and Spirituality 3 credits

Exploration of emerging concepts of quantum physics, cybernetics, general systems theory, psychoneuroimmunology and consciousness studies in relation to spirituality.

Spiritual Formation Courses

PF 1210 Answering the Call 3 credits/ 1 credit per term

Inquiry class focuses on experiencing the call, spiritual diversity and the roles of ministry.

PF 1220 Spiritual Formation I 3 credits/ 1 credit per term

Inquiry class explores models for understanding the spiritual self. Cultivates skill and discipline in self-reflection and spiritual practice.

PF 1230 Spiritual Formation II 3 credits/ 1 credit per term

Inquiry class explores experiences of prayer and discernment.

PF 1350 Faith in Action - Contemporary Issues 1 credit

Examines current cultural issues, their significance for ministry, and the global character of our contemporary life. Applies theological and spiritual perspective to our responses of prayer and action.

Professional Ministry Development Courses

PD 1311 Explorations in Ministry I 3 credits

Explores the forms, roles and disciplines of ministry. Includes practicum.

PD 1312 Explorations in Ministry II 3 credits

Explores the forms, roles and disciplines of ministrial leadership. Includes practicum.

PD 1330 The Crafts of Ministry 3 credits

Students create a Minister’s Service Manual consisting of orders of service, ceremonies, resources, articles and letters for different pastoral occasions.

PD 1350 Holy Listening, Introduction to Pastoral Counseling 3 credits

A preliminary course on individual, couple and group counseling for general ministry and introduction to other forms of ministry using the sacred role of listening.

PD 1360 Speaking for Ministry 3 credits

Approaches preparation and delivery of a message as a spiritual discipline. Explores Homiletics and other forms of speaking used in spiritual leadership.

PD 1370 Teaching in Spiritual Community 3 credits

Introduction to models, principles and practices of spiritual education.

PD 1380 The Business of Ministry 3 credits

Focuses on legal, financial and administrative responsibilities in ministry.

PD 1400 Individual Inquiry Project 2-6 credits

(Prerequisite: completion of core courses)
The Personal Inquiry Project is an in-depth exploration of an approved area of independent inquiry. Projects must involve research, experiential or experimental components and writing or other expressive product.

PD 1550 Supervised Ministry Practice 3 credits/term
Three-term course series provides field experience in ministerial roles. The Dean's Committee must approve internship project. Students will complete 360 hours at internship site and meet monthly with faculty and other interns.
